Joshua Roscoe – Teacher (PGCE – Primary)

Joshua’s career has been driven by a strong desire to make a positive impact on the lives of young people, particularly those who face challenges in the education system. His diverse career has provided him with a wealth of experience working as a school sports coach, as well as teaching in mainstream Primary and Secondary (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health, SEMH) schools, where he has been able to work closely with students to help them overcome obstacles and unlock their full potential.
In his early career, Joshua worked as a sports coach, where he was able to combine his passion for sports with his goal of inspiring young people. His love for football, golf, and a range of other sports allowed him to connect with students in a dynamic and engaging way, teaching them valuable life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. As a coach, Joshua not only progressed their sporting abilities but also worked to build their self-esteem and confidence, helping them understand the importance of physical activity in maintaining overall well-being.
Joshua’s career then progressed and led him to teaching, where he worked with mainstream primary school students and secondary students who struggled with emotional and behavioural challenges. In these roles, Joshua learned how vital it is to provide a supportive and nurturing environment where students feel understood and valued. His time in SEMH schools reinforced his belief that education isn’t solely academic achievement, it’s about providing the right emotional and mental support to help young people thrive. He worked closely with students, providing tailored teaching approaches that focused on building emotional resilience, social skills, and self-regulation. His approach to teaching combined compassion, structure, and consistency, ensuring that students could feel safe and confident in their learning environment.
Joshua’s experiences in teaching and coaching led him to realise that he wanted to create an alternative provision that would give young people who are at risk of falling out of the education system the opportunity to succeed. This vision became a reality when he founded Stepping Stones Alternative Provision. Joshua’s goal was to create a space where students could receive personalised support in an environment that encouraged growth, learning, and positive social interaction. He was determined to help students who may not thrive in their education settings to develop not only academically but also emotionally and socially, becoming positive, well-rounded members of society.
In his free time, Joshua enjoys playing football, golf, and taking part in a range of sports. His passion for sports continues to influence his work, as he incorporates physical activity into the educational programmes at Stepping Stones, recognising its positive effects on mental health and social development. Joshua believes that a balanced, healthy lifestyle is key to achieving success, and he strives to instil this mindset in the young people he works with.
Joshua has committed his time to helping young people succeed, regardless of the challenges they may face. His experiences as a sports coach, teacher, and founder of Stepping Stones Alternative Provision have shaped his holistic approach to education—one that focuses on nurturing both the academic and personal growth of each student.

Kristian Bocking – Mentor (HLTA – Level 4)

Kristian’s career journey has been diverse, having gained valuable experience in a range of roles that have shaped both his professional abilities and his personal values. His experiences span across groundworks, prison officer duties, sports coaching, and teaching, each offering unique insights into the importance of structure, guidance, and a balanced approach to life.
Starting his career in groundworks, Kristian developed a strong work ethic and an understanding of the importance of physical labour and teamwork. The role required him to work outdoors in varying conditions, where precision and attention to detail were key. He enjoyed the hands-on nature of the work, as it allowed him to see the tangible results of his efforts. However, he soon realised that while physical work was fulfilling, he wanted to have a greater impact on individuals’ lives.
This desire for a more direct role in helping people led him to work as a prison officer. In this challenging environment, Kristian learned the significance of patience, resilience, and communication. He gained valuable experience in maintaining order, de-escalating tense situations, and offering support to individuals who were facing difficult circumstances. It was during this time that he developed a deep understanding of how a supportive environment can help people make better choices and progress in life.
With a passion for sports and fitness, Kristian transitioned to becoming a sports coach, where he could inspire and motivate young people through physical activity. He was particularly drawn to coaching football and rugby, sports he had always enjoyed playing. Through coaching, Kristian was able to instil important life lessons, such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance, while fostering a sense of camaraderie and well-being. His ability to connect with young people and encourage their personal development was a fulfilling aspect of the role.
Kristian’s diverse experiences also include working as a teaching assistant, where he supported students with their academic and personal development. His role involved working closely with pupils who required extra assistance, and he quickly realised that a healthy balance of structure and freedom was key to helping students thrive. By creating a supportive and positive environment, he was able to make learning enjoyable and engaging, providing students with the tools they needed to succeed.
Throughout his career, Kristian has come to believe that true happiness and progress come from maintaining a healthy balance in life. Whether through physical activity, professional development, or personal connections, he understands the importance of well-being in achieving success. He enjoys staying fit, playing football, and is dedicated to encouraging others to lead a balanced, healthy lifestyle. This philosophy extends into his work with young pupils, as he strives to provide them with an environment where they can learn, grow, and make meaningful progress.
Kristian’s goal at Stepping Stones is to offer a fresh approach and environment that motivates young people to reach their full potential. By combining his experience, passion for sports, and belief in balance, he is committed to helping others learn, progress, and ultimately lead happy and fulfilling lives.
